May the Force Be With You, Recruiter

A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away, we were introduced to an amazing adventure between light and darkness. As many of you know, the Star Wars franchise became a worldwide pop culture phenomenon exploring good and evil. However, I never pondered the thought that the franchise is centered on the idea of recruiting.

With the prequels, we see Emperor Palpatine being successful in recruiting Anakin Skywalker to the dark side where he becomes no other than the famous Darth Vader. However, recruiting isn’t Dark Vader’s core expertise as he failed to recruit his very own son, Luke Skywalker. If you look at it this way, we have two big competitors: Siths and Jedis. Their goal is to recruit the best people onto their side and become a force to be reckoned with.

So I decided to dig a little deeper into the movies and I had discovered a few quotes that every recruiter should live by.

1. “Never tell me the odds.” - Han Solo

In The Empire Strikes Back, there is a scene where C3PO tells Han Solo that the odds are not in his favor when it came to navigating through an asteroid field. However, Han Solo brushed it off just like any recruiter should do when someone says that the odds in filling a position are very slim. A recruiter should push through and consider this a challenge to succeed.

2. “There’s always a bigger fish.” - Qui-Gon Jinn

So what’s the recruiting translation to that? It’s rather simple: don’t get discouraged if you didn’t close a great candidate or lose one to another agency. Sure, it will be a bummer, but like Qui-Gon Jinn said, there is always a bigger and better candidate swimming in your pipeline. Just need to find a way to hook them.

3. “Patience you must have, my young Padawan.” – Yoda

I think having patience is a major thing to have when it comes to the recruiting world. Whether you’re waiting for a candidate to reply to your email or moving your candidate along the hiring process, patience is very essential in staying sane and positive in the recruiting world.

4. “Size matters not. Look at me. Judge me by my size, do you?” – Yoda

This is a very important quote because it’s all about appearance and first impressions. Sometimes judging someone based on their appearance is not enough. You don’t get the whole story when it comes to reading a resume or reading someone’s LinkedIn profile. Therefore, initial phone calls with the candidates help you determine if that person is right for the role. Hence, we can learn a thing or two from Yoda.

As a recruiter and a fan of Star Wars, I will continue being inspired by these Jedi masters and continue on my search of finding excellent candidates for my roles. And please remember…the force will be with you, always.
